Ashley Johnston and Kelly Babstock Named NWHL All Stars

The National Women’s Hockey asg_17_pit-darkv_largeLeague on Friday announced that New York Riveters captain, Ashley Johnston and Connecticut Whale forward, Kelly Babstock were chosen by members of the National members of the media to be a part of the All-Star Game in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Fifteen members of the NWHL reporters pool, were given the opportunity to submit two players each to send to the festivities next month at the Pittsburgh Penguins’ state of the art practice facility.  Johnston and Babstock received the most votes following the process.

Eleven other players also received at least one vote from the members of the media. Nicole Stock of the Whale and Emily Janiga and Shiann Darkangelo of the Buffalo Beauts received some of the strongest consideration amongst the runner-up.

Johnston, joins her teammates, Rebecca Russo, Madison Packer and Amanda Kessel as they will represent the Riveters at the all-star festivities at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township, during the weekend of February 11 and 12.

Johnston regarded as one of the top defenders in the NWHL, along with Babstock, are both Canadian hockey stars that played collegiately in the United States. Babstock played for Quinnipiac University, while Johnston stared for Union College.

Babstock’s six goals and six assists for the Whale, leads the NWHL in scoring.

The all-star captains, Kelley Steadman of the Beauts and Kessel will now choose eight players each before the coaches get to pick the last four all-stars to round out the rosters. The complete rosters are scheduled to be announced by the end of next week.

Kessel and Steadman were named captains for the all-star teams, as a result of their ties to the Pittsburgh area. Kessel is the younger sister of Penguins forward and Stanley Cup Champion, Phil Kessel while Steadman is the Director of Hockey Operations for Robert Morris University.

Russo and Packer, along with Harrison Browne of the Beauts and Gigi Marvin of the Boston Pride were chosen as part of the fan vote to represent their teams in the all-star festivities.

The NWHL All-Star Skills Competition will take place on February 11at 4:00 PM with the NWHL All-Star Game facing off at 3:00 PM on February 12. Tickets are available to both events at www.nwhl.zone/tickets.
