The National Hockey League announced on Tuesday which players will lead their divisions at the 2017 All Star Weekend in Los Angles January 28 and 29.
The 2017 Honda NHL All Star Game will once again entail three on three mini-tournaments between all four divisions. The captains for each of the divisions were determined by a result of a fan vote.
Pittsburgh Penguins captain, Sidney Crosby, received the most votes amongst the Metropolitan Division earning him the right to serve as the captain. Montreal Canadiens goaltender, Carey Price, received the honor to captain the Atlantic Division by topping his fellow division rivals.
In the Western Conference, Nashville Predators defenseman, P.K. Subban was voted by the fans to captain the Central Division. The 2015 number one draft pick, Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers will lead the Pacific Division into battle during the all-star festivities.
Fans were permitted to vote, up to 10 times per day from December 1 through January 2, at www.nhl.com/vote as well as through the NHL app.
The league introduced the three-on-three format at last year’s event in Nashville. The format features three 20-minute mini games between the players from each division. The winning team from each of the first two periods, will square off in the third period to determine the winning division.
Each squad will consist of 11 players, with six forwards, three defensemen and two goaltenders.
The Los Angeles Kings, celebrating the 50th anniversary of their franchise will serve as the host team for the all the festivities. The NHL is also in the midst of celebrating its Centennial Celebration as well.
The festivities begin on Friday January 27 with The NHL100. On Saturday January 28, at 7:00 PM Eastern Time, the 2017 Coors Light NHL Skills Competition will take place. The highlight of the weekend will be the 2017 Honda NHL All Star Game on Sunday January 29, at 3:30 PM Eastern Time.
