The National Women’s Hockey League and Twitter announced, on Tuesday, a partnership agreement to stream 19 games during the 2017-2018 season.
After the social media company joined forces with the Women’s National Basketball Association last month, the agreement with the NWHL, marks their second venture into streaming a professional women’s sport over their platform. The “Twitter Game of the Week” will feature all four of the league’s teams; New York Riveters, Connecticut Whale, Boston Pride and Buffalo Beauts over sixteen weeks.
The league will also stream the 2018 NWHL All Star Game, as well as two of the four NWHL/Team Russia Summit Series games during the 2017-2018 season. All 19 games will be produced by the NWHL and be exclusively broadcast over Twitter Live. The league will announce the “Twitter Game of Week” schedule in September.
Twitter users can catch the global live stream on connected devices free of charge. Viewers will not have to be logged-in to watch the feed. Fans can access the stream at nwhl.twitter.com or via the leagues Twitter page, @nwhl.
NWHL Commissioner, Dani Rylan said, “With this partnership, Twitter will expand the NWHL audience and give these professional women’s hockey players the major platform they deserve. This is a big important step forward for our league as we approach our third season. I want to thank Twitter for its dedication to women’s sports.”
Twitter’s Chief Operating Officer, Anthony Noto added, “We are thrilled to feature more live professional women’s sports on Twitter by collaborating with the NWHL. Fans around the world will now be able to view live the fast-paced, exciting action on the ice on the same platform where the conversation about hockey is happening.”
As part of the new agreement, Twitter and the NWHL will collaborate on the marketing and production of the broadcast. They will also work together to promote the league as well as the game of the week. Advertising packages, like television commercials, will be available on each live stream.
